Artist Statement
Artistic creation has always been an important part of my life. I love to roam the mountains, rivers, lakes and ocean shores in all seasons, noticing the subtle colours in the sky, the shapes and shadows in rocky cliffs, and each twisted tree. These details catch my eye and inspire me to portray the feeling of these special places on the canvas. Plein air painting is a special challenge, the light and weather change rapidly creating fleeting opportunities. I work quickly and freely, using generous amounts of paint and a large palette knife to capture the essence of what is before me. Time seems to stand still while I paint, and the mind clears of all distractions. My hope is to share with the viewer the feeling of the landscape in that moment.
I enjoy working in many mediums such as pencil and watercolour, but the wonderful texture and colour that can be created with oil painting has fascinated me the most. I continue to learn and to be inspired by the endless possibilities of art and life.
Biography
Darryl Nelson is a self-taught artist inspired by the spectacular scenery of British Columbia, Canada. He is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and his award-winning works can be found in many of their gallery exhibits. Darryl has spent countless hours exploring the lakes and mountains, which are a constant source of inspiration. He has always had a close connection with nature, which he loves to share with his wife and three children. Darryl endeavors to capture those special moments of outdoor life in each painting.
